The stories of the streets we walk on

Troll Avenue

This street lives in USA, Washington

Troll Avenue is an incline, rising northward underneath the George Washington Memorial Bridge, which carries Aurora Avenue. If you keep walking up the hill – and when you walk around Seattle you are often climbing – you will come to the famous Fremont Troll, an aptly named sculpture of the underpass dwelling creature. In its left hand the troll clutches an old fashioned VW Beetle. When I first saw the troll on a visit to my sister and brother-in-law I had trouble admiring it because it was dark outside and a shady guy in a hoodie stared at us while we took pictures. It was a bit unnerving, but I suppose anytime you venture under a bridge you’re bound to run across sketchy people. There are homeless encampments at the top of the hill on the northeast side of the bridge. Still, like most of Seattle, it’s a safe place to walk and quite a sculpture to look at. People leave chalk to write on the troll. You can climb on the sculpture or even have a beer on him. Don’t walk past Troll Avenue without going uphill!
